Frequently Asked Questions
-
Do I really need to use both the Jiffy Universal Finishing System and new Jiffy Natural Universal Finishing System?
Yes. The original Jiffy Universal System is complete on its own. The Jiffy Natural Universal System is the latest advancement in finishing technology. The wheels feature an innovative shape to help polish tooth surfaces more efficiently than cups and points, especially on occlusal surfaces. (Note: Do not use Jiffy Natural Universal wheels near the gingival line, as they can tear gingiva. Use a cup for this). Jiffy Natural Universal wheels are another tool that will help you achieve a high quality finish, naturally. The Jiffy Natural Universal System has the added benefit of tempering high gloss finishes and easily polishing implants.
-
Are you sure I can’t just get by with my old Brownie® or Greenie® polishers?*
No. Modern restorative materials require modern finishing instruments in order to get a good outcome. Brownie polishers were designed for amalgam and were later used on composites. Jiffy Natural Universal polishers are designed to create a superior surface finish on ceramics.

Why does the light orange fine grit Jiffy Natural Universal polishing wheel feel stiffer than the dark orange medium grit Jiffy Natural Universal polishing wheel?
The stiffness is not only related to the grit size. It also depends on the binder used to manufacture the polisher, which is a proprietary formula that essentially holds the diamond grit together and helps with the efficiency and the long lifespan of the polisher. As with all Jiffy Universal adjusters and polishers, we recommend that the customer use a light touch or light hand pressure. Let the polisher do the work. Heavy pressure can create premature wear, and, in extreme cases with the coarser adjusters, can cause sparking during finishing or divots in the restoration. These are extremely effective and high-quality instruments, so there is no need to use heavy hand pressure.
Due to the extreme hardness of materials such as zirconia and lithium disilicate, it is challenging to achieve a truly smooth surface when finishing high-strength ceramic restorations. If a restoration isn’t finished properly, it can result in microfracturing and abrasion of adjacent teeth. It is also challenging to achieve a truly high-gloss finish, which helps give a natural and esthetic look to the restoration.
-
Is there still a need for the Extraoral Kit if my practice uses a laboratory to fabricate ceramic crowns?
Yes. We find that many dentists who use a laboratory instead of in-office milling have a need to adjust and polish lab-crafted restorations extraorally.
-
What is the best way to adjust and polish high-strength ceramics?
High-strength ceramics should be finished using adjusters and polishers that are designed specifically for these extremely hard materials. The Jiffy Natural Universal and Universal Systems give you the highest quality instruments available. These polishers are made of specially formulated Ultradent diamond grit, which enables you to achieve the best finish possible. These systems comprise a simple two-step process at each stage that effectively smooths and polishes all ceramic materials.
-
Can Jiffy Natural Universal and Jiffy Universal instruments be autoclaved?
Yes. Refer to the Disinfection and Sterilization procedures prior to use for complete care and maintenance instructions and recommendations for use.
-
What makes the Jiffy Natural Universal and Jiffy Universal Finishing Systems different than other systems for high-strength ceramics?
With the Jiffy Natural Universal and Jiffy Universal Systems, all adjusters and polishers are equally effective on zirconia, porcelain, and lithium disilicate. This eliminates the need to purchase multiple kits and instruments, saving you time and money while helping you achieve the best finish possible on all of your restorations.
-
How long will the Jiffy Natural Universal and Jiffy Universal Finishing systems last?
The instruments in the Jiffy Natural Universal and Jiffy Universal Finishing Systems are designed for a long life of service. They are made of the highest-quality materials and crafted with the most advanced manufacturing methods available today. The autoclavable stainless steel block that is included with each kit is designed to extend the life of each instrument by preventing warping from bagging separate instruments in the autoclave and dropping instruments on the floor.
Longevity of Jiffy polishers can depend on several factors, including the use of an electric handpiece, whether the clinician uses the recommended RPMs, and whether the instruments are maintained according to the recommended care and maintenance procedures.
-
Is there warranty coverage on Jiffy Natural Universal products?
Jiffy Natural Universal polishers come with a six-month warranty that covers manufacturer defect only. This does not include normal wear and tear, accidental damage, improper care, misuse, user negligence, or failure to use the product in accordance with the manufacturer’s disinfection and sterilization procedures.
